Buying Gold Safely: Hallmark, Invoice and Making Charge

A short checklist for a confident purchase: what to look at on the piece and what should be written on the invoice.

A good purchase starts with understanding what you are paying for. The price of a gold piece is usually made of two parts: the value of the gold itself, which depends on its weight, its karat and the gold price on the day, and the making charge, which is the cost of crafting the piece and varies from one design to another.

Check the piece. Look for the stamp that shows the karat and the maker's or official hallmark. Ask to see the piece on a scale and compare the weight with what is written. For pieces set with diamonds or stones, ask what the stones are and whether a certificate is available.

Check the invoice. A clear invoice states the type of the piece, its karat, its weight, the price per gram, the making charge and the total, together with the date and the name of the store. Keep it, because it is what you need for exchange or resale and for insurance.

Ask about the policy before you pay. Ask how exchange and return work, whether the making charge is returned when you sell the piece back, and what happens if the piece needs resizing. Policies differ between stores, so get the answers in writing.

At New Company you can ask these questions by phone, on WhatsApp or in the store, and we will explain the details of any piece before you decide.

General information only. Ask us about any piece before you buy.
